Even products labeled “organic,” “natural,” or “gentle” often contain some powerful chemical ingredients, including ammonia, PPD (para-phenylenediamine), and heavy synthetic pigments. These aren’t necessarily dangerous when used correctly, but they do leave a lasting impression on your hair — sometimes literally.
Certain types of at-home color, including progressive dyes (the kind that gradually darken over several uses) and some henna-based products, can also contain metallic salts. These compounds build up inside the hair shaft over time and are nearly invisible — you can’t see them, and neither can your stylist, unless they know to look.
Why This Matters When You Come to the Salon
Here’s where it gets important. When metallic salts or heavy box dye residue are present in the hair, and a stylist applies bleach or a professional lightener, the reaction can be unpredictable and sometimes severe. We’re talking about:
- Hair that becomes extremely hot during the service
- Hair that turns brittle or gummy
- In the worst cases, significant breakage or hair loss
This isn’t rare, either.
